Mrs. Candace Winslow is hosting a party at her opulent urban home. It is the annual awards dinner put on by the Foundation for the Advancement of Inclusiveness and Recognition (FAIR), which Mrs. Winslow chairs. Everyone arriving hopes to be the recipient of the FAIR Award, which recognizes hardships, injustices, beleaguered states, neglect, plights, disadvantages, and other transgressions wrought by society. Of course, they all want the cash prize as well.

Petra Barnhouse is the first guest to arrive. A Pennsylvania office administrator turned environmental activist, Barnhouse lost her husband to well water poisoned by fracking. Among the guests who pour in after her are: a Korean political dissident; a lesbian theater director; an idealist millennial; a working class Colombian immigrant; a war veteran; a Houston hurricane victim; a widowed holistic medicine advocate; a Norwegian storyteller and a Syrian refugee. They are all nominees who stand to have their hardships recognized by the FAIR committee, and to walk out $25,000 richer.

Because of the risk of a hate-motivated attack, the location is secret, and all guest/candidates must surrender their mobiles. But little do the party-goers realize that the greatest threat to their safety is themselves.

The Exploding Fete explores just how many rights sides there are to history. It is the story of an evening rife with good intentions, camaraderie, and uninvited debauchery. To add to the fun, the book employs Narrative Branch Technology™, which allows readers to choose the outcome that best aligns with their worldview. Despite this accommodation, probing questions arise: Do the rich really get away with murder? Does media attention do anything to lessen the vulnerability of the helpless, the hapless, the indigent, the indoctrinated, the addicted, the sublimated, the oppressed, the hungry, the poor, the injured, the overlooked, the maligned, the slandered…
